In our book club Classico you’ll read the classics of the Italian literature of the 20th century and ‘future classics’: newly published works. In this class you will find a great variety of language input – from the book, the group and the teacher – and you will talk about different themes and topics with other students as passionate about Italian literature and culture as you are. Your homework is to read a few chapters of the book every week (around 35 pages per week) which, during the lesson, you will discuss with the group. You will be challenged by engaging activities themed around the book, the language and the characters. The Classico book club is the perfect way to practice Italian in an interesting and exciting way.

This course is suitable for students with level from B2 and higher.

In this edition you will read ‘La ciociara’ by Alberto Moravia (1957), a tale about the war – and against the war! – from the point of view of two women on the run. In this book you will read about peace and human solidarity, but also about the inhumanity of war. And of course you will read an interesting depiction of the historical and social context of Italy during the Second World War.

Cesira e sua figlia adolescente Rosetta, vivono a Roma. La guerra colpisce la città e l’Italia e le due donne scappano dalla capitale per rifugiarsi in Ciociaria: la zona tra il Lazio e la Campania in cui è cresciuta Cesira. Il viaggio della madre e della figlia è una continua altalena di paura e atti di umanità, freddo e fame ma anche amicizia e solidarietà, fino ad un brutale atto di violenza che cambia il destino di entrambe.
La ciociara è la storia di due tragedie: quella privata delle due donne in viaggio e quella, collettiva, della guerra. Dopo la guerra e dopo la violenza né un Paese né una donna sono più quello che erano prima. Un cambiamento profondo è avvenuto, un passaggio si è verificato da uno strato di innocenza e integrità a un altro di nuova e amara consapevolezza.
La ciociara non è un libro sulla guerra nel senso tradizionale del termine; è un romanzo in cui è narrata l’esperienza umana di quella violenza profanatoria che è la guerra.
