Exciting news: a new, completely revised edition of Nederlands in Gang has just been published! Nederlands in Gang is the book we use for our A1 and A2 courses. From September, we’ll gradually start using the new book, while still providing options to finish your follow-up levels in the old version. In this blog, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the transition.
In short:
1. If you’re already a student, then whichever book is used in your current course will also be used in the continuation of that course in the next block. E.g. if you are following A1.2 with 2 lessons per week, the next A2.1 course with 2 lessons per week will use the same edition;
2. It is not possible to follow a course with a different edition than the one listed on the website and registration page. We know, it’s sad, but they are really too different to be able to make it work.
Transition
In the upcoming season, some courses will use the old 2017 edition and others will use the new 2026 edition. In the schedule below, you can see which edition is used in which courses (either once or twice per week):
If you enrol in a course and continue to the next level immediately after, the next course (with the same frequency) will always use the same book. If you’re planning to skip a course period and continue after a short break, there are still some options available to continue with the same book; however, if your break is longer than six weeks, you might need to buy the new book to be able to join the next Dutch course. If you already have the 2017 edition and want to start an A1.1 course, the September ‘26 round is your last chance to do so with that edition, but only if you choose a course with two lessons per week.
Content changes
As the current (2017) edition of Nederlands in Gang is already nine years old (barring some small updates in recent years), some of the content was getting a little outdated. In the revised edition of Nederlands in Gang, you will find new themes, updated dialogues and texts to make the book more inclusive, an integrated pronunciation approach and more speaking exercises. With the code in your book, you will also get access to the fully updated website with new videos, interactive exercises and more pronunciation materials.
Though the core structure of the book has largely remained the same, the 2026 edition has 16 instead of 18 chapters, with some new topics added mostly in the later chapters and elements of old chapters integrated in different places. This means that our course structure also has to change to allow for fewer chapters and some key grammar topics have shifted to a different chapter or level.
Does the publication of this new edition mean that following a course with the 2017 edition is a bad deal? Absolutely not! It might not be as sparkly, but the core elements are still the same and it’s a good book to help you learn Dutch.
