We invite you to our improvised cinema to watch classics and hidden gems from the Mediterranean!
Cinema is an effective medium for language learning, offering rich insights into the culture of a country or region. That’s why our school hosts an annual Cineforum, a series of film screenings designed for all those who love and want to discover more about Mediterranean languages and cultures.
Every month, we create a cozy cinema and watch a film in one of the Taalhuis languages around a theme. The theme of this season is “woman”, and we will watch women’s stories from around the Mediterranean basin and the Netherlands. Each film is in its original language with English subtitles, and there is a brief introduction to help you enjoy the film even more.
We close the evening with a borrel in our café, where you can discuss the film with other film and language lovers (or just enjoy a drink).
This month, it’s Italy’s turn, and we’ll watch Due partite (The Ladies Get Their Say) by Cristina Comencini (2009).

Duration: 1h 34m
Language: Italian

Rome, the 1960s. Four women, all very different from each other but all mothers, wives, and high-born, get together every week to play long games of cards. While the mothers are busy playing, their daughters play ‘the ladies’ in the next room because… what else should they play? The card games always turn into intense group therapy sessions where the women vent their frustrations, unfulfilled desires, and feelings of suffocation at having had to give up their dreams in the name of family and reputation.
Halfway between a play (from which, in fact, it is taken) and a “kammerspiel”, “Due partite” gives us a bitter but also very sweet depiction of two generations of women: of the road we have travelled and the road yet to be travelled.
