We invite you to our improvised cinema to watch classics and hidden gems from the Mediterranean!
Cinema is an effective medium for language learning, offering rich insights into the culture of a country or region. That’s why our school hosts an annual Cineforum, a series of film screenings designed for all those who love and want to discover more about Mediterranean languages and cultures.
Every month, we create a cozy cinema and watch a film in one of the Taalhuis languages around a theme. The theme of this season is “woman”, and we will watch women’s stories from around the Mediterranean basin and the Netherlands. Each film is in its original language with English subtitles, and there is a brief introduction to help you enjoy the film even more.
We close the evening with a borrel in our café, where you can discuss the film with other film and language lovers (or just enjoy a drink).
This month, it’s Spain’s turn, and we’ll watch Volver by Pedro Almodóvar (2006).

About the film
Original title: Volver
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Year: 2006
Duration: 2h 1m
Language: Spanish

The film intertwines the destinies of three generations of women. There are Raimunda and her sister Sol, who, after a difficult childhood marked by the sudden death of their mother, have rebuilt their lives in Madrid. There is Paula, Raimunda’s daughter, a restless teenager, and there is the ghost of the two sisters’ mother, Irene, who, at one point in the film, will be an increasingly real presence.
“Volver” is a story of redemption and liberation that begins with a violent act of defence, but which, to materialise in true and authentic freedom, needs a chain of hands, of help, of solidarity. “Volver” is a tribute to sisterhood as the path to emancipation.
