The Riffian Tamazight (Berber) is the language of an estimated 2 to 3 million people in Morocco. The language is spoken in the central and eastern part of the Rif, an area from which many people emigrate. Riffian therefore also plays a major role in the Moroccan diaspora in Europe. In this lecture Dr. Khalid Mourigh, researcher at the Meertens Institute and Berberologist, will place the Riffian within the context of the Berber language family, and talk about the development of the language in Morocco and the Netherlands and the interactions between them.
