Etymology: Legends in language

The word ‘clue’ is from Old English cliwen, and it used to mean ‘a ball of thread or yarn.’ The Dutch word kluwen is its etymological sister. So what’s thread got to do with clues?

Which myths do some of our everyday words reveal? Which pagan gods are still wandering around in our language, and which ancient story is hidden in the word clue? This evening is dedicated to mythical, mysterious, marvellous words.
