Performances, poetry, memes, and graffiti have all been mobilized during and in the aftermath of Nicaragua’s 2018 protests. At this event Dr. Julienne Weegels, assistant professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Amsterdam-CEDLA, will provide an introductory talk about these diverse artistic expressions. A roundtable discussion will follow with Nicaraguan refugees and residents in the Netherlands on their usage of language and culture in the continuing search for justice. The discussion will focus on the role of language and its creative resignifications, whereby protesters transgressively attach new meanings to common expressions and symbols – like the güegüense, a folkloric figure that was appropriated by the protesters.
For those who don’t know anything about Nicaragua, this will be an exciting opportunity to get to know some of its insurrectional, alegre and humouristic spirit and to learn some colloquialisms from the Spanish-Nicaraguan nicañol, like diacachimba (‘super awesome’)!
This event will be in Spanish. During the event we will serve Nicaraguan drinks (mojito with nicaraguan rum!) and bites.

Los performances, la poesía, los memes y el grafiti son todas formas artísticas que han sido movilizadas durante y después de las protestas sociales nicaragüenses del 2018. En este evento la Dra. Julienne Weegels, profesora asistente de Estudios Latinoamericanos de la Universidad de Amsterdam-CEDLA brindará una charla introductoria sobre estas expresiones artísticas diversas. Seguirá una mesa redonda con nicaragüenses refugiados y residentes en Países Bajos acerca de su uso del lenguaje y cultura en la búsqueda por la justicia. El tema central será el uso del lenguaje y sus resignificaciones creativas, en las que los manifestantes a propósito alteran o transgreden el significado de expresiones y símbolos comunes – como el güegüense, una figura folclórica de la que se apropiaron los manifestantes.
Para quienes no conocen de Nicaragua ésta será una excelente oportunidad para conocer su espíritu insurreccional, alegre y humorístico, y para aprender unas expresiones típicas del hispano-nicaragüense o nicañol, como diacachimba (‘muy bueno’)!
Durante el evento serviremos bebidas y bocadillos típicos de Nicaragua.
